Performance Max

What It Is

Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that uses Google’s machine learning to place ads across every Google inventory at once: Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. The advertiser provides assets (images, videos, headlines, descriptions) and an audience signal, and the system decides where, when, and to whom each ad is shown.

Why It Matters

Performance Max is now the default growth campaign type Google recommends, and for many businesses it is the highest-volume way to spend ad budget. It is also a black box: reporting is limited, query data is harder to see, and bad creative gets amplified across every surface at once. Performance Max works best when paired with strong conversion tracking, careful audience signals, and tight negative keyword and brand exclusion lists.
